The Korowai is a traditional woven Maori cloak that has hukahuka (tassels) hanging from the cloak. Worn as a mantle of prestige and honour' and symbolic of leadership with an obligation to care for the people and environment.
Traditionally Korowai were woven from Harakeke (New Zealand flax) and can feature feathers or fur and taniko woven into it.
Today most misinterpret all Maori Kakahu as Korowai, this is actually incorrect. As mentioned earlier the Korowai is a specific Kakahu that has hukahuka or tassels.
Contemporary weavers now incorporate modern materials into their weaving as the process of weaving a traditional Kakahu or Korowai is extremely long.
The Korowai and Kakahu we sell are contemporary versions and prices will vary depending on the labour involved in their creation and the materials used.
