21st Wahaika
21st Wahaika
A Wahaika literally means 'mouth of the fish' and was traditionally made of whalebone or would. It is a short club with a carved figure on one side of the blade (Pūkaiora which represents the God of tribal war, who guards warriors during battle). It was used in close hand-to-hand combat, with the Pūkaiora used to deflect blows while allowing the wielder to strike their opponent in the chest, head or wrist.
